In Volume One, FOUR GEMS has focused the tour around a subsection of the East Village, known as Little Ukraine. The neighborhood has an extremely rich history in terms of occupation since the Lenape Native Americans. After the era of Dutch boweries (at the time that Manhattan was called New Amsterdam), the East Village became an immigrant neighborhood starting from the 19th century onwards (Little Germany, Yiddish Realto, Little Ukraine). After the mid-20th century, the East Village became a center for many artistic movements (the New York counterculture). Nowadays, gentrification alters the East Village, but many efforts are conducted by local community groups in order to preserve the cultural identity of the neighborhood.
