Originally built to host the own purpose of the Yiddish Art Theatre, the Moorish Revival construction has carried a rich history in terms of cultural venue since its opening in 1926. Several times renamed according to the new form of entertainment, the theater hosted off-Broadway productions, burlesque, dance, concerts and finally movies (rebranded Village East by Angelika since 2021). The Second Avenue elevation includes stunning Orientalist pink sandstone cladding, while the 12th Street facade receives a much more Art Deco style with brick rendering. The quality of the architecture as well as the unique character of the interior design are both listed by the New York Landmarks Preservation Commission.
