The 32-card deck is divided into four-color suits, ranking 20, 14, 11, 10, 4, 3, 2 and 1.
Two teams of two players are sitting across from each other. The aim of the game is to collect as many points as possible with your partner by taking tricks. The team that reaches 1000 points first wins the FOUR GEMS. The deck is not shuffled between round, but cut by the player who precedes the dealer.
The cards are dealt counterclockwise, each player receives a set of three cards first, then a second set of two cards. The remaining cards are left face down, except the top card which is turned face up, as the proposed trump suit.
Each player accept or pass the card. If all players pass, a second round is made and players can suggest another card suit as a trump suit. If nobody has suggested a trump suit, the cards are redistributed.
The player that defined the trump suit receives the face up card + two cards from the remaining cards, the other players receive three cards. The game is played in a counterclockwise rotation, starting from the player next to the dealer.
When players have four of the same ranking card in hand, they declare FOUR GEMS during the first trick. The square is shown to the other players during the second trick. FOUR GEMS are valued differently. 20s are worth 200 points, 14s are worth 140 points, and so on and so forth until 1s which are worth 10 points.
The game is played in 8 tricks. Subsequent players must try to follow the dominant suit. Otherwise, they must play a trump card if they can, unless their partner is currently winning the trick. If players cannot follow the dominant suit or play a trump, they can play the card of their choice. When the dominant suit is a trump, subsequent players must play a higher-rank trump card if they can.
The player with the highest scoring card wins the trick. This same player then plays the first card of the next trick. The winner of the last trick gets 10 extra points.
The team of the player who accepted the face up card needs to score 163 points to complete the contract, including declarations if any. Otherwise, the other team scores 325 points.
Card values (points)
If the team who bid the contract wins all the tricks, an extra 100 points is added to the round score (325 + 100 points) + the value of the declarations if any.
