Fanzines were born in the 1930s within science fiction fandom. From the 1970's, and thanks to the technique of copy machines, fanzines became a key tool for the communication of various subcultures at that time (punk, feminism, gay rights). Produced by an amateur press association, the "DIY aesthetic" aspect of fanzines make them highly collectible nowadays. Recently, the Brooklyn Museum hold an exhibition and produced a catalog Copy Machine Manifestos: Artists Who Make Zines dedicated to the rich history of fanzines. In June 2024, the fourth annual East Village Zine Fair was co-presented by Printed Matter / St Marks and 8-Ball Community. East Village Zine Fair is just the perfect occasion to connect with the rich history of the neighborhood.
