As in many cities around the world, New York has created historical landmarks through its street furniture. Since they have been introduced in the 1860s, street clocks were popular as convenience purposes and advertising devices. However, only few remains standing along the streets nowadays. The originally named "Fifth Avenue Building" clock was installed in 1909, when the building at the address was erected (200 Fifth Avenue was known for hosting the headquarters of toy manufacturers in the United States). Since the early days, this gilded clock was famous for being one of the most ornate one in Manhattan. The Sidewalk Clock, 200 Fifth Avenue is considered as a landmark as much as the Flatiron Building, across the street. The cast-iron clock was produced by Hecla Iron Works, a company that supplied many ornemental features for New York City. In 2011, the clock was completely restored by the Electric Time Company, Inc., a worldwide famous company for manufacturing street clocks. The restoration, sponsored by Tiffany & Co., took over 8 months to accomplish.
